John Vanderlyn
John Vanderlyn was born in New York in 1775. He did a lot of other paintings that had nothing to do with Native Americans but this painting showed a different side of Native Americans than the artwork of Thomas Cole or George Catlin. Where the other two artists took a more "noble savage" approach to their work, Vanderlyn took a different route. The image he created was very successful in stirring up peoples' anger at Native American people

Jane McCrea was a young woman that was supposedly killed by Native Americans, but it has not been proven whether she was actually killed by Native Americans or not. The image by John Vanderlyn titled THE DEATH OF JANE MCCREA was used as propaganda against the English, and especially General Burgoyne, who refused to do anything about the Native Americans that were thought to be guilty of killing her, because he did not want to cause trouble or lose the tribe as allies.
